Low Winter Sun

(2013)

Based on a 2006 British mini-series. Looked interesting.

1. Pilot. And it is interesting, so far. It’s set in grungy old Detroit, which was pretty fucked-up already when I spent a summer working there in 1965. It’s gone downhill since then, went bankrupt a few weeks ago, and it looks just awful. Right off the bat two men kill another one and drop him in the river. We quickly learn that all three were cops, and the two killers were avenging the murder of the girlfriend of one of them. They’ve done a good job of it, but things get complicated when the IA “rat squad” shows up to investigate something. We know it’s all going to be about drugs and shit like that, and it promises to be gritty. We’re on board for the next episode.

2. The Goat Rodeo. Nastier and nastier. If these are anything like real Detroit cops, Detroit is in even more trouble than I had realized. And the fact is, I don’t have a lot of trouble believing it.

After one more episode, we decided we had had enough of Detroit, dirty cops, and dope dealers. There was nothing really new here.
