Eagle Eye

(2008)

One of the things I hate most in the movies is when someone takes a good idea and ruins it. This movie has an intriguing premise, though it is not new, concerning just how much surveillance of all types there now is in the world. We are being watched, and the people watching don’t always have our best interests in mind. It is my understanding that there is now no public place you can stand ... Read more »

Earth Girls are Easy

(1988)

Every once in a while a movie comes along that I can enjoy much like an infant in a crib does, just for all the bright shiny colors. One that springs to mind is Speed Racer, which is not a very good movie but so goddam colorful that I enjoyed it in spite of that.

This one is actually a pretty good movie, satirical without being arch at all. It sets us ... Read more »

Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers

(1956)

I don’t know how I managed to miss this one, since I went faithfully to the Saturday matinees in Port Neches and, later, to the dusk-to-dawn nights at the Don Drive-in in Port Arthur, where we would see as many as five of these kind of silly SF pictures in one night. And of course the stills from this movie appeared thousands of times in Famous Monsters of ... Read more »

Earthquake

(1974)

A pretty shaky story.

Earthsea

(2004)

I’ve never read the Earthsea books by our friend Ursula K. Le Guin. It’s never been my sort of stuff, magical medieval stories, but having now seen how wrong I can be after reading my other friend George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (the first five published books, anyway), I think I might give them a try. The important thing with ... Read more »

The East

(2013)

Here is a nifty little film about misbehaving CEOs of major companies, and a group that set about to expose them and make them pay. Britt Marling plays an undercover agent who is suffering from the stresses of leading a double life, and undergoing a crisis of confidence in that she begins to see that her employers are much, much worse than the environmental nuts … who are not all that ... Easter Parade

(1948)

Produced at MGM by Arthur Freed. Songs by Irving Berlin. Dancing by Fred Astaire and Ann Miller. Singing by Judy Garland. What else do you need to know? Not much, really. The story is paper thin, and concerns Fred looking for a dance partner after breaking up with the old one. He makes a drunken bet that he can pair with the next dancer he sees, who happens to be Judy in a chorus line in a ... Read more »

Eastern Promises

(2007)

I met David Cronenberg in Toronto while I was working on Millennium and he was doing Dead Ringers. Both production companies were using the same screening room for dailies. He seemed nice enough, not what you’d imagine if you’d seen any of his films up to that point. He was an early explorer of the goo school ... Read more »
