It Happened To Jane

(1959)

I forget why I bought this when I came across it at Goodwill, where I buy 99% of my DVDs at $2.99 a pop (plus tax in WA, without tax in OR). Possibly it was the memory of high school days in the balcony of the Jefferson Theater in downtown Beaumont, Texas, where my girlfriend and I saw every movie Doris Day made in the early ‘60s. Maybe I thought nostalgia would make this better than it actually was. No such luck. It was dumb then, and it’s dumb now. (Luckily, she and I had better things to do, things that would have shocked Doris Day.) She sings only two songs, the title, and one called “Be Prepared” to a bunch of cub scouts. That’s how wholesome this thing is. (I prefer the Tom Lehrer version. If you don’t know it, go to YouTube. It’s worth your time.) Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs are in it, and are largely wasted.
