A Fish Called Wanda

(1988)

I first saw this at a screening in Toronto with Kris Kristofferson, Cheryl Ladd, Daniel Travanti, John Foreman, Michael Anderson, and David Cronenberg. I remember we all howled with laughter. But for some reason, upon my second viewing 23 years later, it didn’t seem as funny. Possibly it was because I knew what jokes were coming, or maybe I was just in a bad mood. I still think it’s brilliant, particularly Kevin Kline as a seriously stupid (“Don’t ever call me stupid!”) … okay, mentally challenged (he won’t have a clue what that means) ex-CIA agent. He’s so dumb you wonder why they ever let him go. He won a Supporting Actor Oscar for this role. Ex-Pythons Michael Palin and John Cleese are great, too.
