Anne With and E

(Canada)

I, of course, have never read the book, it being a girls’ book, but I think I missed a good one. The story is of an older brother and sister living together who decide to take in an orphan boy to help with the chores on their Prince Edward Island farm. Through a mix-up, Anne is delivered instead. Naturally they send her back, but they weren’t counting on the determination and gumption of Anne, with an E. The girl possesses an incurably romantic mind, and a garrulous and precocious mouth, which gets her into trouble about as often as it gets her out of it. The cast is great, the scripts are well-written, and the exterior settings (some of which are actually PEI, but most of which are southern Ontario) show me one more place on the planet that I’d almost rather die than inhabit. It all lives or dies on who plays Anne, of course, and Amybeth McNulty absolutely nails it. She is terrifically appealing, and you just want to help her. We have seen the first two seasons, and I just learned that that a third season should be appearing on Netflix in a little over a month, on September 22, 2019. We will be there.
