Gaslight (1944)

(1944)

Here was one of the gaps in my classic film knowledge. Everybody said it was great, always wanted to see it, never got around to it. Everybody was right. This is a top-notch thriller, in wonderful black and white. Charles Boyer is wonderfully scary. Angela Lansbury appears here in her first film role—she was 18!—and you could see she was destined for big things. Poor Ingrid Bergman, being driven crazy, helpless like poor Alicia being slowly poisoned in Notorious. But Joseph Cotton comes to the rescue!
