Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot

(2018)

Here’s a movie where possibly I should recuse myself. See, Lee knew John Callahan pretty well. In fact, she typeset the manuscript for the book this movie is loosely based on! And she tells me he was pretty much a total asshole. She says if Callahan were still alive she would #metoo him for showing her that a semi-quad can still get a hard-on. I met him once.

It is undeniable that Callahan was a very funny fellow. He had a wonderfully twisted way of looking at the world, managing to make things like being paralyzed, for instance, funny. Of course, there were those in the disability rights movement who lambasted him because you must take things like that seriously, and I say fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke. I have known many disabled people in my life, so I know what I’m talking about. Anyway, as a movie, I think it’s pretty good, bearing in mind that it really isn’t a very good portrait of the man himself.
