Deep Water

(Australia, 2016)

This is a four-part TV series that is based on the actual murders of somewhere between 30 and 80 gay men in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No one knows the exact number because … well, nobody gave a shit. Two police detectives, Tori Lustigman (Yael Stone) and Nick Manning (Noah Taylor) begin to suspect that there’s a serial killer on the loose. Tori is particularly fascinated by it because her brother washed up on Bondi Beach years ago, and she thinks he might have been one of them. And again, no one really gives a shit for a while. I don’t know if the real murders were ever solved. This being a TV show, we find a culprit in the end. We quite enjoyed this. I wouldn’t mind seeing these characters again, but it might be tough, because Stone is busy being one of the inmates in Orange is the New Black, and probably would be hard to lure back Down Under.
