The Old Man and the Gun

(2018)

The true story of Forrest Tucker, a man who gave new meaning to the term “career criminal.” He spent most of his life in prison, but managed to escape custody no less than eighteen times, once from San Quentin! He was also known as the Gentleman Bank Robber. He was always polite and well-dressed, and seldom even had to draw the gun he had under his coat. He may very well never have fired it during a robbery. So though there was the potential for violence, he was not by nature a violent man. He at least once robbed four banks in one day!

Here he is played by Robert Redford, in what will probably be his last performance. I’ve liked him all the way back to Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda back in … good lord, 1967! And of course there was his breakout role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He’s pretty good here, but it is a minor movie. Fun, but not much else. His co-stars are Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek.
