Our Souls At Night

I have to say I hate the title. I’ve never been able to remember it. Aside from that, it’s a pretty good, if small, movie. Jane Fonda and Robert Redford had co-starred in Barefoot in the Park, one of Neil Simon’s better comedies, way back in 1967. They had good chemistry at ages 30 and 31, and they still do at 80 and 81. Neither of them really look their age, though Redford is best described as “rugged.” I don’t think he would argue with that. They live, singly, across the street from each other in a small Colorado town. They know each other only in passing. One night Fonda comes to Redford’s door with a proposal. Will he come to her place and sleep with her? It isn’t an offer of sex, she says. She’s just lonely. Redford eventually agrees. The rest is fairly predictable. You didn’t think they wouldn’t fall in love, did you? But it’s well done, and both of them are still as nice to watch as they ever were.
